When your school or university logs you into a learning platform, there is a good chance that platform is not the only one involved. There is the main system that the institution owns, the grade book, the announcements, the assignments. And then there are the specialised tools, the quiz engines, the video platforms, the simulations, the subject-specific apps that various lecturers have introduced over the years. For all of this to work without you having to log in thirty times a day, and without your grades getting lost between systems, the different tools have to talk to each other in a carefully agreed way. The protocol that governs most of this conversation is called LTI, and the current version is called LTI 1.3. Almost nobody outside of educational technology knows it exists, and almost nobody inside educational technology could live without it.
The catch is that standards like this are negotiated between the companies that build the platforms. They reflect what was important to those companies when the standard was drafted. What gets passed from one tool to another, and what stays behind, is a political question disguised as a technical one. Student identifiers, scores, engagement metrics, even small behavioural signals can travel across the boundary, depending on how the standard is implemented and what the institution agreed to. Most teachers and most students have no idea where exactly their data is flowing when they click launch. The protocol works. It is also, quietly, a map of how the market for educational technology has organised itself, and who gets to see what.
