When your car makes a funny noise and you guess it might be the brakes, or when a friend stops replying to messages and you quietly assume something is wrong at home, you are not doing the kind of reasoning they teach in school. You are not working from a general rule down to a specific case, and you are not collecting enough examples to prove a pattern. You are doing something different and far more useful. You are looking at a puzzling fact and leaping to the most plausible explanation you can think of, then holding that explanation loosely while you look for more clues. Every detective does it. Every doctor making a diagnosis does it. Every parent trying to work out why a toddler is suddenly crying does it. It is the fastest form of thinking humans have and the one we use the most, and yet most of us have no word for it.
A philosopher named Charles Sanders Peirce called it abduction, and he argued that almost all real discovery happens this way rather than through the neat, tidy logic we get taught as children. It is messy and provisional and sometimes wrong, but it is how scientists form hypotheses, how engineers troubleshoot broken systems, and how you figured out that the weird smell in the kitchen was probably the dishwasher. What is interesting is that artificial intelligence is very good at the other two kinds of reasoning and genuinely terrible at this one, because guessing well at a likely story requires something more than pattern matching. When was the last time you solved something not by knowing the answer but by making a good guess that turned out to be right?
