# Where Our Ideas About Learning Actually Came From
Every profession inherits its assumptions before it knows it has any. The builder inherits the right angle. The doctor inherits germ theory. The teacher, the instructional designer, and the EdTech product manager all inherit something older and harder to name: a set of philosophical commitments about what a mind is, what knowledge is, and what it means to learn. Most of us work inside those commitments for years before we notice they exist.
This first act is an attempt to make them visible.
What We Used to Believe
The earliest recorded debates about learning were not about technique. They were about ontology. Plato's allegory of the cave asked whether the learner discovers truth or merely remembers it (Plato, c. 380 BCE). Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics insisted that virtue — and by extension much of learning — is a matter of practice, not recitation (Aristotle, c. 350 BCE). The Confucian tradition, working in parallel, treated learning as the cultivation of a person in relationship with others, not the transfer of content into an isolated skull (Analects, c. 500 BCE). These are not historical curiosities. They are the first three positions in a conversation that is still running.
Centuries later, the Enlightenment made the conversation systematic. Locke proposed the mind as a blank slate on which experience writes (Locke, 1689). Rousseau pushed back with the claim that learning must follow the developmental grain of the child (Rousseau, 1762). Kant tried to reconcile the two by arguing that the mind contributes its own structure to experience (Kant, 1781). Every modern argument about personalisation, readiness, and scaffolding is a descendant of one of these three positions.
The Research That Changed Everything
The twentieth century turned philosophy into empirical programmes. Dewey insisted that education is the continuous reconstruction of experience in a social setting (Dewey, 1916). Piaget mapped the stages of cognitive development and showed that children are not small adults (Piaget, 1952). Vygotsky demonstrated that learning is inherently social and that the zone of proximal development — the distance between what a learner can do alone and what they can do with help — is where instruction lives or dies (Vygotsky, 1978). Bruner translated all of this into the language of curriculum and gave us the spiral (Bruner, 1960).
In parallel, a very different tradition took shape. Thorndike's law of effect (Thorndike, 1911) became Skinner's operant conditioning (Skinner, 1953), which became programmed instruction, which became the earliest computer-based training, which became much of what we now call adaptive learning. The behaviourist lineage did not disappear. It went underground and re-emerged wearing the clothes of data science.
The result is that modern education has two nervous systems running at once: a cognitive-developmental tradition that treats the learner as a meaning-maker, and a behaviourist-computational tradition that treats the learner as a responder. Almost every design disagreement in an EdTech team is, at root, a disagreement about which of those two traditions is in charge.
The Framework
Act I walks through the theories that grew out of these roots: constructivism, connectivism, experiential learning, situated cognition, communities of practice, andragogy, heutagogy, and the rest. Some of them are genuinely incompatible. Others are incompatible only in the textbook and routinely blended in practice. Either way, a designer who does not know which tradition a given method comes from will keep producing systems that contradict themselves at the level of assumption while appearing consistent at the level of interface.
The point of the first act is not to pick a winner. It is to show that the choices you think you are making about features and content are, much of the time, choices being made for you by a philosophical commitment you inherited in your first training course and never re-examined.
The Invitation
Before the act begins, a practical suggestion. For each theory in this act, ask two questions. What does this theory assume about the learner? And what would it cost, in effort and in honesty, to design a system that actually acted on that assumption?
