# Experiential Learning: Reflection is the Secret Key
In Tuesday's post, I argued that experiential learning is far more than just "learning by doing." I said we often fund the first step of the process – the concrete experience – but skip the crucial stages of reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. We mistake activity for education. I pointed out that a lab exercise or a simulation isn't truly experiential learning if it doesn't prompt learners to think deeply about what happened, build mental models, and then test those models in new situations. The core message was clear: reflection is the work. Here, I want to unpack that claim and show you why it’s not just an academic point, but a critical oversight in how we design learning.
The Deeper Story
The idea that experience is a powerful teacher isn't new. Thinkers like John Dewey and Kurt Lewin explored it long before David Kolb formalized the Experiential Learning Theory. They understood that just going through the motions isn't enough. Imagine trying to learn to cook by simply following a recipe once. You might produce a dish, but do you understand why certain ingredients react the way they do? Do you know how to adapt the recipe if something goes wrong? Probably not. That deeper understanding comes from stepping back.
Kolb's cycle, which I mentioned in the post, isn't just a suggestion; it's a blueprint for how we naturally learn from experience (Kolb, 1984). It starts with a Concrete Experience – you do something. Then comes Reflective Observation – you think about what happened, what worked, what didn't. Next, Abstract Conceptualization – you try to make sense of it, forming theories or mental models. Finally, Active Experimentation – you take those new insights and try them out in a different context.
The problem, as we often see it, is that many programs stop cold after the first stage. They deliver a "hands-on" activity, a "real-world" simulation, or an "immersive" field trip, and then declare victory. But without the deliberate, structured opportunities for reflection, conceptualization, and experimentation, these activities remain just that: activities. They might be engaging, even memorable, but they often fall short of delivering true, transferable learning. We build the foundation and then walk away, assuming the rest of the house will build itself.
The Evidence
The foundational understanding of experiential learning, as outlined by David Kolb in his seminal 1984 work, makes it clear that learning is optimized when learners engage with all four stages of the cycle (Kolb, 1984). It's not a buffet where you pick and choose; it's a continuous loop where each stage feeds into the next. Skipping parts of this cycle is like trying to learn to ride a bike by just sitting on it – you need to pedal, balance, fall, get back up, and adjust your technique. The "doing" is just the start.
Many educators and trainers intuitively understand that active participation is better than passive listening. Students tackle complex, ambiguous problems through iterative cycles: they prototype, test, and critically reflect on their solutions. This isn't just about building things; it's about continuously refining ideas based on feedback and insights generated through structured reflection. The outcome isn't just innovative solutions to real-world challenges; it's students who develop profound creativity, collaboration skills, and critical thinking. Many of their projects even evolve into successful startups, showing the direct, tangible impact of a complete experiential learning cycle.
These examples aren't just about adding a "reflection journal" at the end of an activity. They demonstrate a systemic integration of reflective practices, where learners are consistently prompted to observe, analyze, and conceptualize their experiences. They highlight that for experiential learning to truly deliver on its promise, reflection must be designed in, not bolted on.
What This Means for Practice
So, how do we move beyond simply offering engaging activities to truly fostering experiential learning? It starts with intentional design. We need to build in moments for learners to pause, process, and articulate their understanding.
Here are a few principles to consider:
1. Structure the Pause: Don't assume reflection will happen naturally. Create dedicated time and space for it. This could be through structured debriefs, guided journaling, or peer discussions. Ask Probing Questions: Move beyond "What did you do?" to "Why did it happen that way? What assumptions did you make? How might you approach this differently next time?" Facilitate Dialogue: Conversational learning, as explored by Baker, Jensen, and Kolb (2002), emphasizes the power of dialogue. Structured conversations allow learners to articulate their thoughts, challenge their assumptions, and build shared understanding with others. This social aspect can deepen reflection. 4. Integrate Feedback: Formative assessment and constructive feedback are crucial for self-regulated learning, which directly supports the reflective and conceptualization stages (Nicol & Macfarlane‐Dick, 2006). Feedback helps learners calibrate their understanding and refine their mental models. 5. Empower Learner Agency: As Roberts (2006) points out, learners need to take responsibility for their own learning process, including reflection and conceptualization. This means giving them tools and guidance, but also the autonomy to explore their own insights.
When we combine these elements, we unlock the full potential of experiential learning. We move beyond just doing things to truly learning from them. This comprehensive approach is what leads to significant gains. A meta-analysis of 222 studies, for instance, found that active learning methods – which encompass these full-cycle experiential approaches – resulted in an average exam score improvement of 6% and a 22% reduction in failure rates compared to traditional lecture-based instruction (Freeman et al., 2014). This isn't just about better grades; it's about deeper, more resilient understanding.
The Uncomfortable Question
We often talk about the value of experiential learning and how essential it is for preparing individuals for the complexities of the real world. In fact, a survey of employers found that 80% believe experiential learning is essential for workforce readiness (AAC&U, 2023).
